There’s a number of CVCC riders that participate in events through the year; Gravel Series, cross COTR, Road Races in Victoria, Triathlons; we are fortunate to have our local CV playground to train, participate and ride with fellow members. We have fun and get results. Some aspire to big things! World Record? Why not? We don’t have a track here but… Minor detail.

Derek and Barb gratefully acknowledge Brian for lending his scooter and John Vandervliet for his coaching and riding said scooter on multiple occasions to scootopace these two. CVCC supported the riders with funding to help with transportation expenses at the venue, money well spent as it turned out.

Two Courtenay athletes set Canadian Records at the Mattamy track
Day of the Hour is an international competition held annually at the acclaimed Mattamy velodrome location in Ontario. It’s an opportunity for North American age group athletes to compete against peers in their age category, 5 year age groups ride for the most distance they can cover in 60 minutes attempting to set a World Record and a Canadian Record.
Derek Steel, 81 years old, did just that! He bested a 2017 record set by famous racer and frame builder Giuseppe Marino on the very same track in the 80-84 years old division.
Derek rode 39.836 km to create a new World Record that will be hard to beat. He’s a local phenomenon that makes the Comox Valley Cycle Club proud and many try to keep up with him unsuccessfully.
Training partner and CVCC member Barb Morris set a Canadian Record for women 65-69 years at 38.838 km. Recent gold medalist in the Canadian National Time trial and Road Race events held in Victoria last month she credited local coach John vanderVliet for his support and their success. The cycling community on Vancouver Island has been responsible for helping the pair reach financial goals to get to the event, the CVC club especially for recognizing the potential and dedication shown by Derek and Barb.
There are many local and Vancouver Island athletes that deserve recognition in their role providing inspiration to the community, these two do that and more.
